“Ring-tailed lemurs are endemic to the island of Madagascar off the southwest coast of Africa. The New York Zoo introduced the species to St Catherines Island off the Georgia Coast in the 1980’s to study breeding and troop behavior. The St Catherines population exists as the only free-ranging population outside of Madagascar.”

Of course we anchored off the shores of St Catherines for 2 days in one of the prime locations for viewing these special critters. They are very social, living in groups of up to 30 individuals with the females being dominant in the troops (go figure) and can live 20-30 years.

Our anchorage was in a waterway along the western shore at the north end of the island and situated with great views of the shoreline on one side and panoramic vistas over the marshland to the mainland to the west. The sunsets over the marsh in the afternoon were golden and the weather was perfect.
We didn’t see one.
