Charlevoix Shakedown

Finally we get things in good enough order and have all the boat systems checked out AND (this being the Great Lakes) have a weather forecast that "seems" to be reasonable for travel. Our shakedown run is plotted out to Charlevoix, MI, a half days travel and cruise north just out of Grand Traverse Bay with a quick easterly run along the coast. If we have any mechanical issues (did I tell you that the boatyard removed two more of those pesky fuel clogs from both Peter (port) and Sally (starboard) engine fuel lines?) or if the winds/seas turn out to be rougher than forecast, we can limp back to Northport or on to Charlevoix.

It's a sunny day and the winds are brisk but not too gusty and the cruise goes as planned. We follow the Beaver Island car ferry into the breakwater and cross under the US 31 drawbridge and tie up at the Charlevoix Municipal Marina right in downtown (all 3 blocks of it).

Charlevoix is a cool place. A big city park right on the waterfront, lot's of trendy cafes and shops within walking distance and Oh Yeah, Earl Young's "Mushroom" houses! Oh and Terry's Restaurant!

Winds and seas are now forecast to turn ugly, so we tighten the dock lines and prepare to cocoon for a couple days before heading on. Back in the cruising life and all is good.

Cruising in the Great Lakes always requires a respect for quickly changing weather and big water. You travel when conditions allow it.

Following the Emerald Isle in to the protected bay of Charlevoix harbor.

"ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRH!, welcome to Charlevoix matey!"

Tricks plotting his next escape.

Nice Vicem 72 footer (be still my heart)

Got to be some good eatin' at this place!

Note the ceramic dog, no mess!

Earl Young went to the University of Michigan for one year before striking out on his own as an architect..............go figure.
